Here's an explanation in pseudocode of what exactly the attached patch does: If I'm wrong, I will happily fix that back. The latest version of Gnuplot works with both formats without requiring you to specify a column-separator. My interpretation was that "platforms darwin" would have to include other platforms to make the port usable elsewhere, but I might be wrong about that. In Gnuplot the default environment is AquaTerm. Once you created the maxima-init.mac file and want to change it, a simple-to-use editor is pico. In so doing, you can also choose to use either AquaTerm or X11 as the default plotting environment. I removed the condition to only include aquaterm on darwin platform. maxima folder should be created in your home directory.(The idea is to get the patch upstream eventually, but that might take some extra effort.) gnuplot> plot -pi:pi -1.2:1.5 sin(x) Plotting multiple functions at the same time: gnuplot> plot sin(x), besj0(x) Making surface plot. Currently one advantage of disabling aquaterm would be making qt the default terminal for example. I'm attaching two variants: one with a simple patch and one that adds an extra default variant +aquaterm (making it possible to disable aquaterm). This eliminates the need for both /opt/local/lib/libaquaterm*.dylib and /opt/local/include/aquaterm (both are replaced by contents of framework) and also enables one not to use AquaTerm (less important since AquaTerm is lightweight anyway) or use a different version. I'm attaching a patch that enables using -framework AquaTerm instead of -laquaterm switch when compiling gnuplot.
